However, over the years, I have learned (with a few drops of wisdom shed upon me) that there is a time and place for everything. I'm quite aware that many people in this world have very strong opinions about various different subjects; and over the years, I've also learned that people will not always get along.
Though it may seem like an elementary principle, I think it's an idea that people so easily forget. Man was not meant to get along with everyone or to agree upon everything--think of how boring the world would be. However, man was not meant to be cruel and unreasonable to his brother either, especially over a difference of opinion.
Now, I only say this due to the overwhelming controversial events that have plagued our country in the past two weeks. Abortion and gay marriage will always haunt US politics, and sadly, I don't see an easy political solution to either arising in the immediate future. I myself have very strong opinions about both subjects, which I choose not to express in this particular post (though most of my readers know what they may be). In fact, my personal sentiments (whatever they are) about the Susan B. Komen/Planned Parenthood decision and the overturn of Prop 8 did not inspire me to write this; it was the backlash and lack of propriety displayed on all sides that drove me to question the way people express themselves and share their opinions.
There is a way to express your beliefs without being illogical, unreasonable, or outright rude. And in the end, if this is the only way you know how to express your ideas and sentiments about others and the world, your opinion is degraded to nothing more than a child's outburst about having a cookie before dinner...ridiculous behavior stemmed by uneducated and poorly developed arguments.
Speak logically with respect and credibility, no matter what your beliefs may be. No one will take your opinion seriously if your obscenity and lack of understanding constantly condescends the opposing side. At least I won't. Nothing agitates me more than adults behaving like children, especially when it comes to their opinions. This is the perfect example.
I'm sorry to break it to you, but your opinion will not always be "right." Open your eyes a little more and ask yourself why your mom doesn't want you to eat the chocolate chip cookie before lasagna...it might awaken the understanding hidden by your ignorance.
